The legendary rock, the monumental citadel, the edge of the city. The Acropolis and its ancient temples (Parthenon, Erechtheion, Temple of Athena Nike) is the top landmark of Athens city, easily accessible by foot (5 – 7 minutes) from Thissio or Monastiraki train stations.

Ancient sites of downtown Athens
Surrounding the Acropolis you will find a handful more ancient sites to explore. The Herodion or Odeon of Herodes Atticus, just beneath the Acropolis, has been the central most important ancient theatre in Athens, hosting performances until this day. The Temple of Olympian Zeus stands on the other side of Syngrou Ave. together with Hadrian’s Arch, only a short walk from the Acropolis Museum. A scenic promenade from Monastiraki area to Thissio will reveal the Ancient Agora, while from Monastiraki to Kerameikos area, you’ll find the Necropolis.
Picturesque areas of downtown Athens
For enjoying a few laid back moments around the Acropolis, the hip area of Koukaki (6.4 km) is just the thing on the Acropolis south side, with many quaint little cafes and eateries. The most picturesque district is on the north side, Anafiotika. Cascading downwards from the rock, Anafiotika was built during the 1920’s and the houses are somewhat reminiscent of island life. There you will find an array of traditional tavernas. Part of the greater area called Plaka, found at the base of the Acropolis hill on the north side, is one of the most touristic areas to saunter around, brimming with shops, stores and cafes. Monastiraki Square (5.3 km) is a central meeting point, and where the local flea market is. Next to it are the areas of Thissio (5.3 km) that goes all the way up to the Acropolis’ west side, and Psyrri (5.1 km) , which is another hip neighbourhood, on the other side of Monastiraki, a popular spot for evening hang-outs. Kerameikos (5.4 km) is a lively place packed with bars, and it is where Technopolis is located, an area that hosts many interesting festivals occasionally, from food to music. Metaxourgeio (4.3 km) is a transitional area of Athens, frequented by younger crowds because of its edgy, alternative ambiance.
Urban retail in Athens
For those who wish to get a taste of the urban retail attractions of Athens, then Ermou Street is your starting point, from Monastiraki station. It is Athens’ high street shopping street, connecting Monastiraki Square all the way up to Parliament (Syntagma Square – 5.4 km). For more up-scale & designer shopping, make your way over to the posh district of Kolonaki, where you will find many designer houses.
Cultural sites in Athens
Cultural sites in Athens are numerous, depending on visitors’ specific interests. Starting with the basics, the National Archaeology Museum (3.6 km), the Byzantine Museum & Museum of Cycladic Art (5.4 km), the Museum of Greek Folk Art (5.8 km); these cover the fundamentals of Greek heritage from antiquity to more recent times. Must see is also the state-of-the-art Niarchos Foundation National Opera (9.8 km) which hosts some great theater, dance & music shows apart from providing a nice setting for a leisurely evening stroll.

Well connected and full of conveniences, Patisia is one of the up and coming areas of Athens. Green Suites Hotel in Athens is not far from the OAKA Stadium (4.2 km), which hosts sports games as well as performing arts events, the Galatsi area (2 km) and the wonderful gardens of Alsos Veikou (2.8 km), which provides a verdant setting in an otherwise concrete city. We also have two more public parks as our locals, Drakopoulos park (200 m) and another at our local train station
